In a country where social sciences are neglected, the Journal of Academic Studies is addressed to people who work in the social sciences. The main characteristic of this press is its compliance with the academic criterion. The Journal of Academic Studies is an expert review that is published quarterly since 1999. The other peculiarity of the Journal of Academic Studies, is that it originates from the Academic Studies Center which works intensively on Central Asia, Ex-USSR States, and Caucasus.

Central Asian Survey is a refereed journal concerned primarily with the history, politics, cultures, religions and economics of the Central Asian and Caucasian regions. These include those territories and predominantly Muslim Irano-Turkic populations from western China to western Anatolia sharing a common historical, ethnic, cultural and linguistic heritage and in some cases communist experience. Foremost among these are the republics of former Soviet Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Crimea, and the Muslim Ibero-Caucasian and Turkic peoples of the North Caucasus, Middle Volga and Urals whose territories are included in the Russian Federation. Also covered are Chinese Xinjiang, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia. The recent unfolding of political, demographic, economic and military events which have precipitated new strategic linkages, raise the spectre of important local and regional change and make Central Asia and the Caucasus an area of significant contemporary interest.

The aim of this journal publishing 3 issues per year since 2000 is to establish a line of communication with this little known area of Europe. Previously isolated from the European mainstream, the Black Sea area is in need of serious comparative study as are the individual countries, lying at the edge of Europe, that make it up. The principal disciplines to be covered by the journal are politics, political economy, international relations and modern history; other disciplinary approaches are accepted as appropriate. The journal will take both an academic and also a more practical policy-oriented approach and hopes to compensate for the serious information deficit on the countries under consideration. It provides a unique opportunity to establish a new paradigm of analysis for the region and one that attempts to break away from the traditional ethnocentric approaches and develop a deeper and more fruitful understanding of the area.

While its prime concern is with political developments, the focus of Mediterranean Politics extends to all the dimensions affecting political life. These include the social and economic landscape, migratory movements and issues of cultural identity. Besides research articles, the journal carries a profile section, devoted to briefer analysis of recent events, and a substantial review section. Music and Anthropology is an online multimedia peer-reviewed journal promoted by the Study Group on "Anthropology of Music in Mediterranean Cultures" of the International Council for Traditional Music. It is published annually since 1996. Music and Anthropology serves as a forum for studies which approach music as an essentially human and social expression. The journal is interdisciplinary and welcomes dialogue not only among the different fields of musical scholarship and the domains of social scientific scholarship, such as cultural and social anthropology, but also between music and psychology, folklore, feminist and gender studies and so forth. The journal seeks to explore the contributions offered by different disciplines through the investigation of fundamental questions concerning the human and social dimensions of music. The primary geocultural focus of M&A is the Mediterranean. The 'Mediterranean', however, signifies not merely a geographical and historical region, but also a metaphorical entity with constructed and contested boundaries, cultures, and identities. By drawing attention to the complex phenomena that characterize Mediterranean musics, M&A aims to foster research in the region and to broaden the range of approaches to music and musical practices beyond the region's borders.

Given Turkey?s significance and the great interest in studying its history, politics, and foreign policy, Turkish Studies presents a forum for scholarly discussion on these topics and more. Turkish Studies features full-length articles, book reviews, and discussion roundtables. At the same time, there has been an equivalent expansion of serious research on Turkey, both within that country and around the world. Published since 2000, The biannual Turkish Studies aims to highlight these issues and the scholarship focusing on them. Turkish Studies addresses matters regarding the modern era of the Turkish Republic, including the fields of political science, international relations, history, economics, sociology, and other relevant topics. We hope that Turkish Studies contributes to an even greater expansion and higher quality of research on Turkey-related topics, and exemplifies the fine work currently being done in the field.

The German Institute for Middle East Studies uses a multi-disciplinary approach to study contemporary political, economic, and social developments in the countries of North Africa, the Near East, Middle East, and of Central Asia. These general tasks are given concrete expression by individual research projects carried out within the institute that flexibly adjust to developments. Recent research has focused on aspects of political opposition, the role of the media in democratization processes, or the impact of globalization on the region. In doing so it is the aim of the Institute to constantly make available high quality research findings for scientific and teaching purposes as well as for the wider public. It publishes the scientific journal Orient, a Near East Yearbook, research reports, and other works. Its library holds approximately 33,000 books and about 230 periodicals covering political, economical, and social questions in modern Middle East and North Africa, including texts in Turkish. On behalf of the German Research Society the library collects gazettes published by governmental and non-governmental institutions (grey literature) in the region. Besides, the newspaper archive of the German Institute for Middle East Studies receives approximately 30 daily and weekly papers from countries in the region and western Europe.

The Forum of Social Research is a service-oriented, web-based network finalized to produce cooperative works of social research. It addresses especially Ph.D. students, post-doctoral fellows and early career faculty. Social research is here conceived as including a broad range of disciplinary affiliations: sociology, anthropology, history, political science, geography, area studies, religious studies. Members have decided to pool in their resources and skills in order to enhance their collaborating potential and maximize the impact of their research activities on traditional research institutions and career paths; and to disseminate the skills of research cooperation and networking to a younger generation of graduate students, who can be assisted through mentoring activities as well as via their inclusion in the core group of members.

Among the avenues of collaboration, the Forum organizes grounding permanent working groups (lasting two to three years), based on research projects. The thematic areas coincide with the working groups (the main cells of original research work @Forum), but new areas of social research can be added by new members. Recent working groups include ?Islamic Traditions and the Notion of a Public Sphere? ; ?Islam and Muslims in contemporary Europe?. The forum also facilitates and sponsors publishing initiatives, preferably related to forum-sponsored research projects.

The Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association addresses scholars from the traditional four fields of Anthropology (Linguistics, Archaeology, Physical Anthropology, and Socio-Cultural Anthropology). It rests on the idea that one cannot understand social life and socio-cultural change in the Middle East without the time depth provided by archaeology, paleoanthropology, and historical linguistics. What is more, one cannot even define the "Middle Eastern" region historically or geographically without a typology of its languages and a sophisticated knowledge of the relationships between the written traditions of the area and its oral traditions and practices. Finally, one cannot understand the Middle Eastern states without knowing how food production, exploitation of natural resources, and epidemic disease have effected the urban populations characteristic of state societies.

Progress made in promoting exchanges between the peoples of the North and the South, together with the creation of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership in 1995, has given rise to the Euro-Mediterranean, a new framework for relations between Europe and the Mediterranean countries that is being slowly but surely built up through frequent contact across the two shores. OTAP is a cooperative international project of the University of Washington Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization, and the Bilkent University Halil Inalc?k Center for Ottoman Studies. It employs computer technology and the resources of the World Wide Web to make transcribed Ottoman texts and resources for understanding Ottoman texts broadly accessible to international audiences. The core task of OTAP is the Web publication of transcribed Ottoman texts in searchable and analyzable form, but the project also acts as a resource and umbrella for several related projects. Its mission is : (1) to create resources that will enable scholars, researchers, decision-makers, and the general public to understand better a critical area of the world and one of the last great multi-ethnic empires ; (2) to effect radical positive change in the way in which primary resources from the Ottoman Empire are made available to a world-wide public ; (3) to contribute to a healthier, safer, and more secure world by providing the groundwork for better informed and more thoughtful interactions among nations and peoples.

The archives of Paul Stirling?s data address eventual public access for teaching and research, as well as the passerby who has a more than casual interest in Turkey and its past half-century of change. Paul Stirling?s motives for preparing the archives were threefold. Firstly, the period covered was a period of dramatic change in Turkey and he had been fortunate enough to document some of this change at the level of the villages. He believed that this information was of great value for studying this change and as a basis for future research. Secondly, he wanted a complete record of his field research, including its defects, for teaching purposes as well as for research. It is rare for an anthropologist to provide a more-or-less complete record of their field research - it is unprecedented to do this for public inspection. He spent a great deal of time and effort adding comments to his fieldnotes, careful to be as brutal and honest as possible. Thirdly, he hoped this work would serve as an exemplar for how ethnographic research should be presented, to encourage transparency and depth where the usual case is to disseminate tidbits and rely on faith. He was aware of the negative effects of conventional publishers on anthropology which effectively restricts ethnographic works to extended essays with popular appeal and little or no data. He saw the computer as a means of subverting this trend.

In 1994, a group of intellectuals began to publish a quarterly strategic studies journal, Avrasya Dosyas? (Eurasian File), in Ankara to fill the gap they felt existed in Turkey when it came to a regular publication dealing with international relations. The Europe Asia Union Turkish Economic-Social and Cultural Research Foundation (Avrasya-Bir Foundation) was established in Istanbul in 1993. Its aim was to conduct research on Turkish society from economic, social, political, and cultural perspectives, following the global changes and developments on the Eurasian axis that came about during the late 1980s. The Avrasya-Bir Foundation began providing material and moral support to the Eurasian file from 1996 onwards and it officially became the Avrasya-Bir Foundation's publication in 1998. In 1999, the foundation decided to form the Center for Eurasian Strategic Studies and incorporated strategic, political-economic and social fields into its studies. ASAM began to operate as a strategic data bank and strategic research center in December 1999.
